State and Local Government Session 7: Powers of the Executive Branch
Compile a list of powers of the Virginia Governor based on the entire class’ findings on the board.
Give two-column notes on the powers and policymaking role of the executive branch. Give examples of each type of power or executive action, including the following:
• Proposing legislation in an annual speech to the legislature (State of the Commonwealth Address)
• Appealing directly to the people
• Approving or vetoing legislation
• Appointing officials who carry out the laws
Compare this list with the powers the class listed.
Explain that cabinet departments, agencies, and regulatory groups interpret and help with carrying out laws.
For homework, read the section in the textbook on the state court system.
