Responsibilities of Citizenship
Session 3:
Taking Part in the Voting Process
Materials
- Voting “ballots”
- Teacher-developed evaluation form for Classroom Citizen of the Week
Instructional Activities
- Discuss the following questions:
• What is voting?
• What are some things people vote for?
• Why is the voting process important?
- Tell the students that the class will vote for the Classroom Citizen of the Week for the following week. Review the responsibilities of a good citizen before beginning the classroom voting process. Remind students to think of a student who has demonstrated these responsibilities.
- Hold an election for students to vote for the Classroom Citizen of the Week. Tally the votes, and announce who is the Classroom Citizen of the Week for the following week. This can be repeated throughout the year, striving to have each child become Classroom Citizen of the Week.
- After each student’s turn at being Classroom Citizen of the Week, have other students complete an evaluation form. Compile the forms, and give them to the citizen of the week.
